U S. House of Representatives The New York Times

united states house of representatives news

House Republican leadership has put forward billions of dollars in foreign aid bills for Ukraine, Israel and allies in the Indo-Pacific. New York Democratic Rep. Gregory Meeks, ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, joins "America Decides" to discuss how his party is planning to respond. House Speaker Mike Johnson is bundling the bill that could lead to a ban on TikTok into his four-part foreign aid plan. The legislation would require TikTok's Chinese owner, ByteDance, to sell the popular social media network or face a ban in the U.S.

A Chinese Firm Is America’s Favorite Drone Maker. Except in Washington.

Al Jazeera’s Patty Culhane said the Democrats who voted against the bill on Israel were very vocal in their criticism of the Israeli prime minister. The ministry also said it “will coordinate the relevant budget uses with the United States through existing exchange mechanisms, and work hard to strengthen combat readiness capabilities to ensure national security and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait”. Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense thanked the US House for its “rock solid” support for Taiwan after the bill passed. However, reacting after the House approval, Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the new US aid package would “deepen the crisis throughout the world”. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude on Saturday, saying US lawmakers moved to keep “history on the right track”. Republican Party holdouts repeatedly put forward the name of Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida, ensuring continuation of the stalemate that increasingly carried undercurrents of race and politics.

Senators weigh in on TikTok as House bill heads their way

Efforts to ban TikTok go back to the Trump administration, but the issue has been revived in recent months. The House already passed a similar bill in March — a bill that the Senate showed little interest in taking up. This new version expands the window for ByteDance to sell TikTok to nine months (compared to six months in the previous bill) and gives the president the ability to grant a single, additional 90-day extension. Also referred to as a congressman or congresswoman, each representative is elected to a two-year term serving the people of a specific congressional district. The number of voting representatives in the House is fixed by law at no more than 435, proportionally representing the population of the 50 states. Currently, there are five delegates representing the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Speaker Johnson News Conference at Columbia University

The US has so far sent Ukraine roughly $111bn in weapons, equipment, humanitarian assistance and other aid since the start of the war more than two years ago. Democrats have said they may support Johnson in any effort by the Republican far-right to oust him over Ukraine aid. Another bill included a provision to force the Chinese company ByteDance to sell its popular social media app TikTok, which Congress is worried gives China the ability to gain information about American citizens. That bill – the 21st Century Peace through Strength Act – also included the seizure of frozen Russian sovereign assets, and more sanctions on Iran. The Israel bill includes about $4.4bn to replenish depleted US supplies given to Israel; $4bn for missile defense, including the much-vaunted Iron Dome, and $1.2bn for the Iron Beam; and $3.5bn to help Israel buy weapons. There are also provisions to make it easier to supply Israel with US munitions held in other countries.

Former President Donald Trump weighed in Wednesday for the first time on the debt ceiling deal reached by President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy took a victory lap immediately after the House passed the debt limit deal with a big bipartisan showing. Minutes before the vote on assistance for Kyiv, Democrats began to wave small Ukrainian flags on the House floor, as hard-right Republicans jeered.

After Roe v. Wade was overturned in June 2022, then-Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich, a Republican, persuaded a state judge that the 1864 ban could be enforced. Still, the law hasn’t actually been enforced while the case was making its way through the courts. Brnovich’s Democratic successor, Attorney General Kris Mayes, urged the state’s high court against reviving the law. Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade decision guaranteed the constitutional right to an abortion nationwide.

What you missed on Day 8 of Trump's trial: New witnesses and contact info for Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal

Rep. Steve Womack of Arkansas and House Appropriations Chair Kay Granger, two other Republican Jordan holdouts, said they agree. He’s a passive skeptic of the 2020 presidential election results, but was an active election denier who appeared at a “Stop the Steal” rally in Pennsylvania and also appears to have played a role in former President Donald Trump’s post-election strategy to overturn the results. Rep. Jim Jordan failed to win the House speakership on his first bid Tuesday, leaving the House in paralysis after 20 Republicans opposed the Ohio Republican. McCarthy touted the bill’s provisions on work requirements, clawing back COVID funding and rescinding funding for the IRS.

Architect of the Capitol

What started as a political novelty, the first time since 1923 a nominee had not won the gavel on the first vote, has devolved into a bitter Republican Party feud and deepening potential crisis. With McCarthy’s supporters and foes locked in stalemate, the House cannot fully open for the new session, essentially at a standstill, unable to swear in elected members and conduct official business. And feelings of boredom, desperation and annoyance seemed increasingly evident on Thursday.

The Senate is expected to vote Tuesday on the foreign aid bills passed by the House over the weekend, but the move could cost Speaker Mike Johnson his job. The man needed to see the necessary national-security budget bill through, Mike Johnson, the Republican speaker of the House, seemed unfit for the task. Thrust into the role from relative obscurity six months ago after his loud, isolationist colleagues defenestrated their previous leader, Kevin McCarthy, Mr Johnson lacked leadership experience.

Through defeat after defeat, McCarthy remained determined to persuade Republicans to end the paralyzing debate that has blighted his new GOP majority. “This sacred House of Representatives needs a leader,” said Democrat Joe Neguse of Colorado, nominating his own party’s leader, Hakeem Jeffries, as speaker. As night fell before the second anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol by Trump supporters trying to overturn Joe Biden’s election, Democrats said it was time to get serious. The divisive speaker’s fight only underscored the fragility of American democracy exposed by that assault. Even if McCarthy is able to secure the votes he needs, he will emerge as a weakened speaker, having given away some powers and constantly under a threat of being voted out by his detractors.

But Scalise’s allies feel like they did far more to rally around Jordan than Jordan did when Scalise initially won the nomination last week. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer and Conference Chair Elise Stefanik have been working behind the scenes to help Jordan flip votes this afternoon, multiple sources familiar tells CNN. But Majority Leader Steve Scalise has decided not to get actively involved – illustrating how the current top Republican leaders are taking different approaches to the speakership drama, with emotions still raw inside the conference. Speaker Kevin McCarthy defended the debt limit deal from conservative criticism during a speech on the floor while the House debated.

The House approved a bill Friday to extend Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act for a shortened period of two years, reauthorizing a crucial national security surveillance program. Its stock of air-defence interceptor missiles, fired from a mix of American, European and Soviet-era launchers, has dwindled. Russian attack jets have recently been providing close air support to troops with seemingly little risk of being shot down. America’s Patriot missile-defence systems are in high demand elsewhere, including Israel, and production is low. On April 11th it successfully launched an attack on a thermal power station in Kyiv using a Kh-69 stealth cruise missile that eluded a Patriot interceptor. Even with enough kit, Ukraine confronts a serious manpower disadvantage compared with Russia.

The vast majority of that will be spent on lethal aid by replenishing American military stockpiles, allowing more to be given away, and procuring new weapons and ammunition from American arms firms. An American three-star general has already been assigned the job of organising arms deliveries, subject to the vote. The Pentagon should be able to start getting shells to Ukraine within two weeks, reckons Michael Kofman of the Carnegie Endowment, a think-tank, and can supply enough to last for a year or so.

Rep. Nancy Mace said that she still trusts House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, despite her frustrations with and opposition to the debt limit deal that passed the House on Wednesday night. President Joe Biden called House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and other congressional leaders Wednesday night after the debt ceiling bill cleared the House, a White House official said. Members were voting on a package worth close to $95bn in total, but which had been broken up into four separate bills, as Johnson effectively de-coupled the vote on Ukraine from funding for Israel, which is more widely supported among both Democrats and Republicans. There’s no love lost between McCarthy and the eight Republicans who voted to oust him. Particularly on a day when they’re expected to allow the new speaker to pass his own clean CR without similar repercussions for his job.

House Approves $95 Billion Aid Bill for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan The New York Times

If the federal government shuts down Saturday, numerous publicly funded agencies will stop work and their employees won’t be paid, but Social Security checks will still go out. Democrats support aid for Israel but oppose the House's bill because it cuts funding to ramp up IRS enforcement. As a result, it would add billions to the deficit, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Senate Republicans are trying to use the fact that there is no pending business before the Senate — because they’re waiting for the House to pass this CR so they can start considering it — to try to force consideration of the House-passed Israel aid bill.

Speaker of the House: Rep. Mike Johnson

Among the Democrats who voted against the bill was Representative Ilhan Omar, who has been an outspoken critic of the US’s role in the war on Gaza. Several Western donors have since resumed funding to UNRWA, which is a lifeline for nearly two million people in Gaza. However, despite allocating funds for humanitarian assistance, the bill stipulates that funding for the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) is prohibited.

House delivers Mayorkas impeachment articles to the Senate to begin a trial

Speaker Kevin McCarthy told CNN earlier Wednesday that he is confident the debt limit deal will pass with a majority of House Republicans’ support, a critical threshold that GOP leaders have been feverishly working to secure over the last several days. Rep. Ken Buck told CNN after the debt limit deal passed the House that conservatives will be having discussions about ousting Speaker Kevin McCarthy “in the next week or two,” although he didn’t commit to following through with that threat. The package largely mirrors the foreign aid proposal passed by the Senate in February, although it designates $10bn of the Ukraine funding as a repayable loan to appease some Republican members. The Senate is set to begin considering the House-passed bill on Tuesday, with some preliminary votes that afternoon. Final passage was expected sometime next week, which would clear the way for Biden to sign it into law.

Former Colorado paramedic Jeremy Cooper was sentenced to four years probation, 14 months work release and 100 hours of community service on Friday afternoon. These were the updates on the race to become US House speaker for Wednesday, October 4. As speaker pro tempore, the Republican can only recess the House, adjourn the chamber and recognize speaker nominations.

Unlikely alliance clears way for House vote on Israel and Ukraine aid

Jordan said the expected return of Florida Rep. Gus Bilirakis, a Jordan supporter who missed the first vote to be at his mother-in-law’s funeral, should help him and insisted they are chipping away at the holdouts. He said if he voted no on the agreement because of what it lacked, he "would never vote yes." His comments come after conservatives in his conference have claimed the bill does not go far enough to cut spending. The House has passed the debt limit deal to suspend the nation’s debt ceiling through January 1, 2025. President Joe Biden praised the House for passing the bipartisan debt limit deal Wednesday night, and urged the Senate to “pass it as quickly as possible” so he can sign it into law.

Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., who voted to oust Kevin McCarthy, had an odd run-in with the former speaker in the halls this morning. Rep. Derrick Van Orden, R-Wis., said he'll support the CR today and wondered aloud about criticism of the bill focused on the fact that Democrats plan to support it. The tensions on Capitol Hill are hitting their peak after a long period in session. The House has been working for 10 weeks straight, an unusually long time without a break, and several of them were spent on an ugly fight over the speaker's gavel. Then, Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., tried to start a physical fight with a committee witness, the president of the Teamsters union, Sean O’Brien. Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., had to break it up, yelling at both men and banging his gavel.

This follows Israeli unsubstantiated accusations that the agency’s staff were involved in Hamas’s October 7 attacks. The bill, which was stalled for a long time following deep splits in Republican camps, now heads to the Senate for a vote. The longest fight for the gavel started in late 1855 and dragged on for two months, with 133 ballots, during debates over slavery in the run-up to the Civil War.

Mitch McConnell says providing aid for Ukraine is one of the most important legislative victories of his career. The Senate minority leader sat down with CBS News chief foreign affairs correspondent and "Face the Nation" moderator Margaret Brennan to go over his call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. During a news conference Tuesday, Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy said he did not make a deal with the White House on supplemental aid for Ukraine. McHenry, a strong ally of McCarthy’s, played a key role in successfully negotiating the California Republican’s speakership in January by chipping away at some of the same hardline conservatives that opposed McCarthy’s leadership on Tuesday. Chuck Schumer, leader of the Democratic majority in the Senate, confirmed the vote would begin on Tuesday. The legislation now proceeds to the slight-majority Democrat Senate, which passed a similar measure more than two months ago.

Larger weapons systems will take much longer to ship; some still need to be ordered, let alone manufactured. The hope is that it will be enough to fend off a larger-scale Russian offensive that Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Ukraine’s military-intelligence service, has said he expects in June. "When I make a statement that I’m praying about it, I am praying about it, and when I get a call from the speaker and he belittles that, to me, that shows another reason why we need a change in leadership,” Burchett told reporters on the way to the House floor Tuesday. The REPO Act, which would authorize Biden to confiscate the frozen Russian assets in U.S. banks and transfer them to a special fund for Ukraine, is part of the foreign aid package that was stalled for months in the House.

The legislation includes $60 billion for Kyiv; $26 billion for Israel and humanitarian aid for civilians in conflict zones, including Gaza; and $8 billion for the Indo-Pacific region. It would direct the president to seek repayment from the Ukrainian government of $10 billion in economic assistance, a concept supported by former President Donald J. Trump, who had pushed for any aid to Kyiv to be in the form of a loan. Johnson’s reliance on Democratic votes to pass key pieces of legislation, including a major government funding bill that cleared the House last month, has outraged some hard-right Republicans.

More than $6 billion of the $300 billion in frozen Russian assets are sitting in U.S. banks. The contours of an agreement with holdouts from the conservative Freedom Caucus began to take shape, including several of the key rules changes they have been seeking for months. Those changes would shrink the power of the speaker’s office and give rank-and-file lawmakers more influence in drafting legislation. “The discussion about the motion to vacate is going to happen in the next week or two,” Buck, who opposed the debt limit deal, told reporters Wednesday.

As the spectacle of voting dragged on, McCarthy’s backers implored the holdouts to fall in line. “Kevin McCarthy is not going to be a speaker,” declared Rep. Bob Good, R-Va., one of the holdouts. Without a speaker, the House cannot fully form — swearing in its members, naming its committee chairmen, engaging in floor proceedings and launching investigations of the Biden administration. Tensions flared among the new House majority, and all other business came to a halt.

French and California home design sensibilities are surprisingly chic when blended. Classic French interiors can read overtly formal and ornate; offsetting the style with pared-back California comfort can make a Francofornia space feel fresh and au courant. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. 'French country decor ideas are all about creating a casual and rustic elegance,' explains interior designer Gray Walker. 'The use of soft pastels, classic florals, and tailored stripes will help create the mood of collected luxury.

Based in Washington, D.C., Darryl Carter, a former lawyer, turns out cool, calm, and collected spaces that are distinctive in their masculine rigor. They are full of smart neutral fabrics, dark wood furniture, and strong silhouettes. Bold patterns, jewel tones, and exotic accents are characteristic of Alex Papachristidis’s work. “Any antique mirror and a gilded wood mirror, for sure, adds French style,” Aki says. Not only will placing a large mirror above your fireplace echo French interiors, it will also bounce light around the room. Art is an integral part of French designs and carries more than just an aesthetic value. With it, you’re free to go with family photos and cute pet pictures or make a statement through paintings and antiques. But what about the arrangement—what’s the right pattern for wall art here? It can be an electronic device, piece of clothing, collective object, or, in our case, furniture.

Born and raised in the South of France, Marie-Laure Helmkampf has a distinctly modern French style with beautiful earthy undertones. Light and the effects of light on objects is of primary importance to the designer. With a general vision of the overall project in mind, Helmkampf lets her projects evolve from there. She favors objects that suggest warmth and uses their colors and textures to link and contrast to the architectural elements of the house. Helmkampf creates elegant yet rustic French homes mostly in the French countryside, including modern farmhouses, village homes, and country cottages. Being a huge admirer of her projects, I have written an article just on her work, see end of this post for a link.

And, rightfully so—the structure has been a fixture in French décor for centuries. 'I was dazzled by the extraordinary size and quality of this 18th century heirloom pair of chandeliers hanging in the middle of the ceiling, infinitely reflected in the mirrors at both ends of the double space. These flooring materials can be complemented by large area rugs to strike just the right balance between comfort and style. The right colours can set the whole mood for your home and is incredibly important for the modern French style.

Speaking of the design, it’s a combination of farmhouse, rustic, and Baroque styles. If you’re regularly having family and friends over, it’s important to make sure the guests don’t feel cramped up. For this reason, most large living rooms in French interiors have at least two couches and a pair of chairs. A vintage or repurposed coffee table will look perfect in a French-inspired space. Victoria Hagan’s projects have ranged from sprawling country homes to elegant city residences.

Stucco finishes, intricate tilework, dark wood tones, archways, and wrought iron accents characterize the aesthetic. Just outside of downtown St. Paul in the heart of the West Seventh neighborhood sits the fabled Mancini’s Char House, which opened there more than 70 years ago. Charbroiled beef dominates the menu — New York strips and sirloins fly out of the kitchen alongside lobster tails, baked potatoes, and relish trays. Live music is frequent, so be sure to check the restaurant’s calendar on its website. Grab a cocktail, tuck into one of the red high-backed booths, and relive the glory days with charbroiled steaks, healthy-sized lobster tails, and foil-wrapped baked potatoes. While the term “chain” can sometimes have a negative connotation, Ruth’s Chris in Minneapolis has been serving up delicious cuts of beef to its downtown patrons for years.

Steak & Chicken

Mancini's Char House, a family-run business since 1968, prides itself in great food and service with a personal touch. Wilson has been firing on all cylinders answering the phone from potential guests to the Rathskeller, but as a resident to the neighborhood herself, she feels honored to bring the community back into the Rathskeller after it sat unused for around 20 years. “We have the beautiful building bones, and behind that we have the Mancinis’ food, so it’s a win-win for people to come down here,” she said. Maninci’s Char House opened in 1948 and has decades of its own legacy, so the family feels as though they were uniquely suited to carry on the history of the Rathskeller.

13 Essential Twin Cities Steakhouses

The historicity of the space is not lost on Pat, his son and chef for the family’s establishment Nick and event coordinator Molly Wilson. That’s why they plan on disturbing little if anything about the visible space in which many St. Paulites have spent time. But the space has a state-of-the-art kitchen and a brand-new tap system. Built in the 1930s, the Rathskeller today sports just about every facet of its original condition. One can practically hear the bustling of regalia and music echoing off the walls.

It’s all about service at Manny’s, a classic steakhouse with moody lighting and a beautiful bottle-lined bar. Servers are well-versed on the various cuts of beef and willing to educate patrons on their meals. The double-cut prime rib is a great choice, while the famous “Manny’s seafood tower” adds a fun bit of extravagance for a larger party. It’s not categorically a steakhouse, but the steaks, all grilled over Minnesota hardwood, are notable, and span from classic filet mignon to New York strip and a 24-ounce Chateaubriand. Sides include truffle gouda gnocchi, whipped potatoes, and grilled asparagus with Bearnaise.

With a formal, historic ambiance, the Lexington is a great spot to celebrate a special occasion. Housed in the 510 Groveland building near Loring Park, P.S. Steak serves some of the Cities’ best steaks in an opulent dining room and lounge. The Denver steak is exceptionally tender — the grilled asparagus with truffle vinaigrette and sauteed mushrooms are ideal veggie foils for P.S. Taking inspiration from traditional Brazilian cuisine, Fogo De Chao is known as an event hotspot with attentive service.

Above the bar is an original painting of Otto and Adolf Bremer, who helped finance the Schmidt Brewery, drinking a beer in the woods with Jacob Schmidt. Along one wall are the remains of now collapsed (or so they say) tunnels that were used to cross under West 7th  in the days of prohibition. It is said that Ed Bremer, nephew of Otto Bremer, used one tunnel to cross over from Stahlmann/Bremer Mansion. Try the rich, 40-ounce Porterhouse for two, or the lamb chops served with fresh mint — the lobster tail and shrimp are ideal accompaniments to any meal. A supper club in the truest sense, folks come from far and wide to enjoy the steaks and convivial atmosphere of JD Hoyt’s. If you’re looking for a steakhouse that leans casual, this is a great option. Classic cocktails like aperol spritzes, mules, and daiquiris and cajun-inspired meat and seafood can be enjoyed in the photo-clad dining room or the patio. Since 1946, the family-owned steakhouse has been serving its famous silver butter knife steak out of its iconic, old-fashioned building — you can’t miss the neon signs and hand-painted steak decal walking down 6th Street.

While the steak is the star of the menu here, don’t overlook the Tennessee hot chicken sandwich with ghost chili sauce, if you’re in the mood for something different. The Butcher’s Tale is a phoenix risen from the ashes of the Butcher & Boar. Though the restaurant may not be a traditional steakhouse, it serves a notable array of steak dishes, from the angus beef tenderloin to achiote-marinated hanger steak. Enjoy a pour from one of the most extensive whiskey and bourbon lists in the Cities in the beer garden or on the sunny patio. Mancini's has used this same tradition for steaks and lobsters, hand-picked at the wholesalers and broiled to perfection on Mancini's big, open charcoal broilers.

Some might succumb to the pressure of that task, but the Mancinis feel like the space will speak for itself. “If there’s any pressure it’s to sustain the legacy, but I feel like that’s not hard to do in a space like this,” Nick said. “We’re going to let the space tell us what it wants to be,” Pat later added. Carefully raised and aged beef is grilled on huge open-hearth charcoal pits.

Dr. Patrick lockwood grew up in a small southern missouri town, enculturated with classical southern and midwestern values like honesty, integrity, and the “neighborly” way of relating to people. In April of 2021, Christina returned home to the Friendly House to take on the role as Admissions and Business Development Manager. In January of 2022, she became the 4th Executive Director of the Friendly house and is one of the few women of culture to hold an Executive level position in this industry. She has been sober since May 14, 2012, and believes that sobriety is a gift. Heather hopes to help Friendly House expand their footprint and serve more women who are entering sobriety.

As a sober person myself, I know how important it is to support our community and to give others the help I was given. Working with Peggy Albrecht Friendly House allows me to be of service for not just a cause but directly with women that I believe in. She started by going to the Los Angeles County Jail to visit women incarcerated there. At first she met resistance from the sheriff’s department, but gradually through persistence and demonstrated success, she won the department’s support.

Her upbringing instilled in her the belief that “to whom much is given, much is required”, which drives her commitment to helping others. However, she emphasized that the need for local funding is higher than ever to keep helping people find fresh starts with dignity and compassion. Grants are earmarked for specific things, but donations allow them to pay their staff to provide services and purchase food and other necessities for their guests. I was very close to the late Executive Director, Peggy Albrecht, the major reason for my affiliation from 2011 to present. This position has chosen me, equipping my soul with a sense of duty to honor the founders and continue the mission. Women in need should have a safe place to go so that they may find a sense of purpose. Friendly House is a special model where women can get their lives back and become a proud member of society.

By 1963, Friendship House of Christian Service had grown to serve nearly 150 families and provide over 23,000 contacts. Our first facility, a Quonset hut donated by Bradley University and dubbed “Operation Friendship House”, generated community excitement and served as both missionary residence and recreation center. The Peoria Friendship House of Christian Service is proud to be a strong non-profit organization in the Greater Peoria Area. We see the need for our programs and services and are excited to see where the future takes us. We offer residential programs for adults that focus on American Indian values and customs. The majority of our program staff have been where you are, and we rely on their knowledge and experience.

EVENTS

Our program is available throughout the United States and internationally for English-speaking people. Fosters one-to-one friendships between college students without IDD and their peers on campus or in the community with IDD. Young adults with IDD historically have been isolated at home or in work environments. The Best Buddies Colleges program is changing this by providing the opportunity for people with IDD to be involved in their local campus and community life.

We are proud to say that Marcia has now attained the status of Emeritus Board Member. We thank Marcia for her continued involvement, friendship and support of Friendly House. I have been on the Board since 2000 and was Board President for 3 years. I got involved with the Peggy Albrecht Friendly House because some of my friends were involved with the house. Also, I learned more about Peggy Albrecht Friendly House when I was helping my sister seek recovery.

How to Get Rid of Fruit Flies: 5 DIY Traps

how to get rid of fruit flies in the house

This is a good way to remind your household to eat fruit before it starts to spoil. “Tiny food crumbs left on your kitchen sponge or countertop are a feast for the fruit fly,” says Brooks. The best way to get rid of fruit flies in your drain is by removing all organic matter and setting one of the aforementioned traps. You can also pour boiling water down the drain or a half cup of baking soda followed by a half cup of vinegar, then let it sit for around 20 minutes. Both of these methods will eliminate some existing fruit flies, but you should still pair them with a trap to get rid of all of them.

Wash your fresh produce

Keeping things clean and tidy and putting food away can keep fruit flies and their eggs from coming back. Put plastic wrap over the opening of the bottle using a rubber band, with a few poked holes on top. Some chemicals available in the market can help you eliminate fruit flies.

Use a wine trap

The simple trick uses water to repel flies from entering the house. It's really quite simple, working on the basis that flies have compound vision, meaning that their two eyes are essentially the equivalent of thousands of eyes so they see vast multiples of everything. The bag of water is multiplied in a fly's eyes and will therefore appear to be a bigger body of water to repel them from approaching. Here are some best ways to prevent fruit flies in the future.

Get rid of excess moisture

The well-respected MeacoDry Arete One is an all-around great dehumidifier plus our tester noted how simple and super easy it is to use. It is also quiet, so would make an ideal bedroom dehumidifier. It even has a laundry mode, handling your home's moisture and wet clothes. Don't forget that you can also then use bananas in your garden to help plants after you have used them in your trap.

Check less obvious spots for residual debris too, such as garbage disposals and sink drains. Additionally, keep your recycling bins and trash cans in check, clearing them out as often as you can. Overripe fruit, rotting food, and fermentation can all cause a fruit fly infestation. Fungus gnats are black and more commonly found milling around the soil of houseplants, as this is where they lay eggs. Drain flies, on the other hand, are typically found around sink drains (surprise!) or garbage disposals, and they have larger V-shaped wings—they almost look like tiny moths.

Tips to prevent fruit flies from coming back

There are certain plants and flowers that attract flies, particularly if they produce sugary substances, so it's worth a check to see if your indoor plants are the problem and are attracting flies. Another way to keep flies out of the house, the same as keeping mosquitoes away, is to cover open doors or windows. Because like when trying to keep ants away or keep wasps at bay, natural solutions are always the preferred methods where you can.

Here, you’ll discover the top ways to identify bugs in your home, banish fruit flies from your home, plus how to prevent them in the first place and we’ve asked the experts to weigh in with their advice. The small flies or gnats in your kitchen are generally fruit flies. And although particularly prevalent in late summer and fall, they can be a bother year round, so being savvy about how to get rid of fruit flies indoors is crucial.

How to Clean Vinyl Flooring Without Damaging It

If DIY methods fail, a professional will know how to get rid of fruit flies quickly and effectively. We’ve reviewed the nation’s top providers, all of which have locations spread throughout the country. Here are our recommendations based on our research into experience, price, and customer reviews.

For those bugs, check out our guides on how to get rid of gnats and how to make a homemade fly trap. There are many easy ways to get rid of fruit flies, including DIY traps and store-bought solutions. If you’re diligent about following these tips, you should be able to squash your fruit fly problem without any professional help.

As suggested by their name, fruit flies are big fans of fruit. And while you might not think anything of having a fruit bowl on your kitchen counter, this could be doing more harm than good. That’s because fruit flies will do everything they can to get near ripened fruits and vegetables - and they’ll even lay their eggs on them. Apple cider vinegar can work a treat when dealing with these flying pests, as the flies are extremely attracted to the sweet and acidic smell. All you have to do is fill a bowl with apple cider vinegar, cover it with cling film, and poke a few holes in the plastic.

That said, you may be wondering how to get rid of fruit flies for once and for all. A simple, free, and effective homemade fly trap can be made with a few household items. “The flies flying around your kitchen likely came from outside,” says Thomas.

They can live off of scraps from the garbage or compost, as well as scum in the kitchen drain. Since fruit flies like fermentation, you might also find them getting into alcoholic drinks, vinegars and dressings, and items that contain yeast, like bread. Try leaving out an open bottle with a little leftover liquid — the skinny neck will keep the flies trapped.

According to the study, fruit flies are easily attracted to rotting, ripe, or decayed fruit. According to new research, fruit flies carry many bacteria, including E. The germs will also be transferred when they fly from a dirty surface onto fresh foods. Additionally, Female fruit flies will inject their eggs into fresh fruit after mating. These contaminated fruits can lead to food poisoning and even some life-threatening diseases. All you have to do is place a bowl of apple cider vinegar on the kitchen counter, with cling film over the top.

"In the wintertime, you rarely see any fruit flies because it's cold outside," Shetlar says. "Any of the surviving fruit flies are surviving out there as dormant pupae and it won't be until it warms up that they'll become active." According to Zach Schumm, insect diagnostician at Iowa State University, just about anyone can get fruit flies — and not just in their kitchen.

She was particularly worried about the color of the walls in the alcove off the living room where she would install a “Hollyhock Gold,” a large painting of intertwined and elongated hands. During Barnsdall’s time, the nook held one of several Japanese screens purchased by Wright, who was largely absent during Hollyhock’s construction, working in Japan on the Imperial Hotel. Financially strapped, he started a side gig importing art and sold several screens to Barnsdall for her home. The two eventually ended up in court over the screens, among other things. The museum is not available as a location for private events, photoshoots, filming, or fundraisers. PARKINGHollyhock House is located at the top of the hill in Barnsdall Art Park.

Bonnet House has survived with remarkable authenticity – reflecting the creative lifestyle of its artist owners and preserving the natural setting of Old South Florida. This whimsical property preserves the home of the Bartlett family and offers a glimpse into their lifestyle, and the fascinating world of art in the early 20th Century. Enjoy a guided tour of the house with one of our seasoned Bonnet House docents. Enter through the Main Visitor Parking Lot on 9th Street off Birch Road / West Gate. With Fathers Day right around the corner, we could not forget to include a special way for Fathers to feel celebrated this year.

A Historic Artists' Estate

On Sunday, June 18th, 2023 fathers will receive free admission to Bonnet House Museum & Gardens with the purchase of one additional ticket. Whether your dad enjoys art, culture, history, or nature, there will be something new for him to learn and enjoy at our estate. Bonnet intentionally placed her work into spaces where Barnsdall had displayed art from her own collection.

A shell midden left by the Tequesta people indicates that human activity on the site dates back to 2,000 B.C. While further archaeological evidence suggests that the grounds saw one of the first sites of Spanish contact with the New World. Brach responded with an enthusiastic yes, even though the Hollyhock House hasn’t displayed contemporary art since becoming a museum in 1976. For Brach, the opportunity to have new art interpret the house harks back to Barnsdall’s desire that her home, which was originally envisioned to be part of a larger experimental arts colony, be an inspiration for art. The safety of our visitors, staff, and volunteers is our top priority. Due to the ever-changing health and safety guidelines and the small, intimate nature of the museum, all policies will be re-evaluated on a regular basis and updated as needed.

Virtual Learning

With this marriage, a renaissance occurred on the site as Frederic and Evelyn entered a prolific period of embellishing Bonnet House with the decorative elements that delight visitors to this day. CYCLINGWe encourage visitors to cycle or take public transportation to Hollyhock House. Cyclists can plan their route using  LADOT Dash or Metro bike maps. Bicycle racks are located near the accessible parking spaces across from the Hollyhock House driveway.

The show puts new works — two large paintings and a work on paper by Bonnet, and 11 ceramic vessels by Silverman — in dialogue with the house. Additionally, donations enable us to continue offering unique opportunities for the public to learn and explore our estate. For example, this year we are excited to announce that we are hosting a Night At The Museum! We are inviting guests to participate in one of our two extravagant experiences. These include an overnight stay at Bonnet House and dinner for two (or eight!) individuals.

For the first time since the site’s 2022 reopening, the child’s bedroom will be on view as part of this special exhibition with six ikebana works in this space alone. In house museums like Hollyhock, artworks vie for attention with other parts of the domestic interior, such as furniture (here, much of it designed by Wright), views and even what books rest on a shelf. In their placement, Bonnet’s paintings and Silverman’s vessels highlight specific spots where tensions — sometimes layers of them — steep. Their artworks bring heated conversations between objects back into the room. Hollyhock House presents Flowers for Aline, a special exhibition of 45 fresh-flower works by the Sogetsu Ikebana Los Angeles Branch. • Click here to learn more and register for one of our guided tours.

Originally built in 1941 for LA Times journalist Theodore Bonnet and his wife, the treasured pad is embedded directly into the Hollywood Hills and set on a steep, sloping site. As such, the southwest-facing lot offers up epic canyon and city views. In 2020, the estate was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.

It’s a relational act where multiple influences solidify into a new compound — the tumbling stacking of conversations, experiences, places. Similarly, Silverman, who used a process called tumble stacking for several of his works where pieces are stacked on top of one another in the kiln, is interested in what compression within a small space can do. “The pieces melting together and merging into a new thing — losing their independence, in a way, and becoming fully dependent on one another and something completely different — like a relationship does to you,” he says. Please understand that an inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public place where people are present.

Separately and for a donation of $5,000, visitors can enjoy the elegant entertaining tradition of the Bonnet House estate, just as its iconic former owners, Frederic and Evelyn Bartlett did. This experience for eight includes a specially curated tour, pre-dinner cocktails, and dinner on the veranda or moonlit courtyard. Menu options may be exquisitely personalized and could include dishes like a scrumptious lobster first course, steak, and a full open bar. For a donation of $5,000, we will be offering a once-in-a-lifetime experience that includes a luxurious dinner for two and an overnight stay in the newly renovated guest suite. Visitors will participate in a VIP experience of the upstairs and downstairs of the main house and take a sneak peek inside normally closed areas of Evelyn and Frederic Bartlett’s private living quarters.

Personal Details

We believe that every person's story is important as it provides our community with an opportunity to feel a sense of belonging, share their hopes and dreams. Thankfully, he is not only a father to his biological kids but also extends the loving branch to his stepdaughter, Zoe Kravitz. Momoa and his kids recently attended "The Batman" premiere to support Zoe. Apart from living comfortably and a few blocks from his family, the "Aquaman" icon has resumed a not-too-serious relationship with actress Eiza Gonzalez. Momoa has been described as a man who is not into a luxury lifestyle. So living in his camper van and wearing ripped clothes even though he would appear a certain way does not bother him.

Large-print and braille self-guided booklets are available inside the museum. We are using timed ticketing to aid social distancing, and late entry is not guaranteed. Staying true to the original ‘40s floor plan, the gourmet chef’s kitchen has been refreshed with gleaming marble counters, cork flooring, a pendant lamp, and stainless-steel appliances. Elsewhere, the primary suite is wrapped in glass and decked out with a curved, open-hearth fireplace.

The two-bedroom residence was built in 1941 and has been designated a Historic-Cultural Monument.

The former couple are parents to two kids whose appearances are as stunning as their famous parents. Before ending their marriage, Momoa was visibly in awe of fatherhood as he sometimes loved to show off bits of their family life at home. Bonnet House, Inc. is a nonprofit, 501c3, whose mission is to celebrate the story of Frederic and Evelyn Bartlett, we preserve the art, history and nature of Bonnet House, providing inspiration and respite for all.

Fusing the indoors and out, one can look out from the bedroom at a small yard that’s tucked away on the side of the house. Plus, there are also two additional patios that act as an extension of the great room, which was no doubt Neutra’s intention. There’s a certain amount of pressure that comes along with owning a Richard Neutra-designed residence. Luckily, you can test the waters by renting one of the architect’s mid-century modern masterpieces instead. The automobile was customized in 2018 to look and feel like a home away from home. William Bonin Gets Caught In The Act And Faces Justice

The estate offers an extraordinary blend of art, architecture, history, and ecology. Filled with a delightful collection of art and personal treasures, the Main House exudes a sense of charm, whimsy, and gracious living. The surrounding grounds of the estate remain a virtual oasis of coastal wilderness and informal gardens, nestled amid the commercial development of the Fort Lauderdale beachfront. “I was interested in having work where we knew she had work — placed exactly in the same place,” she says. She looked to the few archival photographs that exist from Barnsdall’s time living there — which wasn’t long. The house was completed in 1921; Barnsdall, a single mother frustrated at the upkeep the home required (that water feature!), gifted the property to the city in 1927. “I thought about domesticity a lot — Dutch still lifes, paintings that are a performative show of wealth and abundance on elegant tablecloths, Holbein portraits of people in their homes pretending to do work.

Built in 1920 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Bonnet House Museum & Gardens is one of the few complete homes and studios of two American artists with original furnishings open to the public. Nestled among miles of beachfront development are 35 acres of a native barrier island ecosystem. Allow an extra 1/2 hour for a self-guided walking tour of the grounds.

Description – Following a guided tour of the Main House, a docent will lead you on a tram tour of the Nature Trail describing the various species of native and landscaped plants. Docents will focus on the plantings done by Hugh Taylor Birch, and the landscaping created by his son-in-law Frederic Clay Bartlett. You will tour through palm-lined allees, past a stone fountain, a desert garden, and more. When the artists, who worked alone in their respective studios, brought their works together at the site, they were surprised to find “the house absorbed the work in a generous way,” as Bonnet puts it.

The couple's 10-acre estate, perched on the mountainside on the outskirts of LA, shows off an open field suitable for family picnics. A few weeks after the since-deleted post, the couple was rumored to have reconciled. The "Aquaman" star, who moved out initially into a camper van, moved again into their home. To the outside world, everything seemed perfect with the Momoa-Bonet family; that was why it was shocking to many when the couple's love story turned sour.

In addition to our printed guidebook, a free digital version can be used on visitors’ own personal smart devices. We are limiting capacity and utilizing timed tickets to allow for greater social distancing. Momoa also revealed that parenting his daughter required more nurturing. Also, the actor stated that he tries to keep his father of instincts when acting, but sometimes, it helps to interpret the character the best way.

Tours are led by our seasoned Bonnet House docents and will be offered for only $40 per person. Bonnet House’s modern history began when Birch gave the Bonnet House property as a wedding gift to his daughter Helen and her husband, Chicago artist Frederic Clay Bartlett in 1919. The newlyweds began construction of Bonnet House in 1920, eager for a winter retreat where Frederic could pursue his artwork and Helen could compose music and poetry. Frederic’s visits to Bonnet House then became sporadic until 1931 when he married Evelyn Fortune Lilly.

Though, it’s been thoroughly renovated and maintained by its previous owners. Also, a source confirmed that the couple's teenage kids were happy about the reunion. But before the gossip had time to settle, Momoa explained that they were not back together and were family during a red carpet interview.

Frederic died in 1953, but Evelyn continued to return each winter. In 1983, Evelyn Fortune Bartlett gave Bonnet House to the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation. Her contribution—at the time, the largest charitable gift in Florida history—ensured that the site would be preserved for the enjoyment and education of future generations. A boisterous example confronts visitors almost upon entry, in the long hallway known as the loggia. So Barnsdall improvised, pushing two Wright-designed tables together to jury-rig a stand for it, asserting herself in the space.

Twelve-year-old McCabe was waiting for a bus to take him to Disneyland in March 1980, when he was snatched, bludgeoned, strangled, and tossed in the trash. The majority of Bonin’s victims had been sexually assaulted and were strangled with their own T-shirts, with the killer using a metal bar to tighten it around their necks. He ran away from home at the age of eight and in his early adolescence, he was sent to a juvenile detention center for stealing license plates. During his time in the detention center, Bonin was allegedly sexually assaulted by older teenage boys. Bonnet and Silverman’s intervention into this hallowed architectural monument posits that creation — even when artists are working alone — is rarely a single, solitary pursuit.

I took that as a sort of structure and put these weights — pushing and pulling emotions — into the form that sits on top of it,” says Bonnet of how the site inspired her works for it. Docents are stationed around the museum on all of our self-guided tour days, eager to take questions and engage in dialogue with visitors. There are also detailed guide books provided for use onsite at no extra charge, available in both hard copy and digital formats. Beginning on June 1st and lasting through September 3rd, Bonnet House will also be hosting our annual Summer Family Special. This special deal includes $20.00 admission rates for adults and free admission for any individual 17 and under (accompanied by adult).
