She was particularly worried about the color of the walls in the alcove off the living room where she would install a “Hollyhock Gold,” a large painting of intertwined and elongated hands. During Barnsdall’s time, the nook held one of several Japanese screens purchased by Wright, who was largely absent during Hollyhock’s construction, working in Japan on the Imperial Hotel. Financially strapped, he started a side gig importing art and sold several screens to Barnsdall for her home. The two eventually ended up in court over the screens, among other things. A Historic Artists' Estate
On Sunday, June 18th, 2023 fathers will receive free admission to Bonnet House Museum & Gardens with the purchase of one additional ticket. Whether your dad enjoys art, culture, history, or nature, there will be something new for him to learn and enjoy at our estate. Bonnet intentionally placed her work into spaces where Barnsdall had displayed art from her own collection.

While further archaeological evidence suggests that the grounds saw one of the first sites of Spanish contact with the New World. Brach responded with an enthusiastic yes, even though the Hollyhock House hasn’t displayed contemporary art since becoming a museum in 1976. For Brach, the opportunity to have new art interpret the house harks back to Barnsdall’s desire that her home, which was originally envisioned to be part of a larger experimental arts colony, be an inspiration for art. The safety of our visitors, staff, and volunteers is our top priority. Due to the ever-changing health and safety guidelines and the small, intimate nature of the museum, all policies will be re-evaluated on a regular basis and updated as needed.

With this marriage, a renaissance occurred on the site as Frederic and Evelyn entered a prolific period of embellishing Bonnet House with the decorative elements that delight visitors to this day. CYCLINGWe encourage visitors to cycle or take public transportation to Hollyhock House. Cyclists can plan their route using LADOT Dash or Metro bike maps. Bicycle racks are located near the accessible parking spaces across from the Hollyhock House driveway.
The show puts new works — two large paintings and a work on paper by Bonnet, and 11 ceramic vessels by Silverman — in dialogue with the house. Additionally, donations enable us to continue offering unique opportunities for the public to learn and explore our estate. For example, this year we are excited to announce that we are hosting a Night At The Museum! We are inviting guests to participate in one of our two extravagant experiences. These include an overnight stay at Bonnet House and dinner for two (or eight!) individuals.
For the first time since the site’s 2022 reopening, the child’s bedroom will be on view as part of this special exhibition with six ikebana works in this space alone. In house museums like Hollyhock, artworks vie for attention with other parts of the domestic interior, such as furniture (here, much of it designed by Wright), views and even what books rest on a shelf. In their placement, Bonnet’s paintings and Silverman’s vessels highlight specific spots where tensions — sometimes layers of them — steep. Their artworks bring heated conversations between objects back into the room. Originally built in 1941 for LA Times journalist Theodore Bonnet and his wife, the treasured pad is embedded directly into the Hollywood Hills and set on a steep, sloping site. As such, the southwest-facing lot offers up epic canyon and city views. In 2020, the estate was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.
It’s a relational act where multiple influences solidify into a new compound — the tumbling stacking of conversations, experiences, places. Similarly, Silverman, who used a process called tumble stacking for several of his works where pieces are stacked on top of one another in the kiln, is interested in what compression within a small space can do. “The pieces melting together and merging into a new thing — losing their independence, in a way, and becoming fully dependent on one another and something completely different — like a relationship does to you,” he says. This experience for eight includes a specially curated tour, pre-dinner cocktails, and dinner on the veranda or moonlit courtyard. Menu options may be exquisitely personalized and could include dishes like a scrumptious lobster first course, steak, and a full open bar. For a donation of $5,000, we will be offering a once-in-a-lifetime experience that includes a luxurious dinner for two and an overnight stay in the newly renovated guest suite. Visitors will participate in a VIP experience of the upstairs and downstairs of the main house and take a sneak peek inside normally closed areas of Evelyn and Frederic Bartlett’s private living quarters.
