On Saturday, April 20, 2-4 pm, four high-ranking Sogetsu masters and selected students will present ikebana demonstrations free to the public in the Barnsdall Gallery Theatre. Demonstrations by Marilyn Drageset, Yumiko Inoue, Chiyoko Chasin, Tony Shum, Mikayo Arao, Keiko Miyahara, Haruko Takeichi, and Kaz Kitajima. Tours of the Main House and specialized tours of the grounds are available to groups of 15 – 60. Your group is cordially invited to select a special tour of Bonnet House.

“I was interested in having work where we knew she had work — placed exactly in the same place,” she says. She looked to the few archival photographs that exist from Barnsdall’s time living there — which wasn’t long. The house was completed in 1921; Barnsdall, a single mother frustrated at the upkeep the home required (that water feature!), gifted the property to the city in 1927. “I thought about domesticity a lot — Dutch still lifes, paintings that are a performative show of wealth and abundance on elegant tablecloths, Holbein portraits of people in their homes pretending to do work.
Built in 1920 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Bonnet House Museum & Gardens is one of the few complete homes and studios of two American artists with original furnishings open to the public. Description – Following a guided tour of the Main House, a docent will lead you on a tram tour of the Nature Trail describing the various species of native and landscaped plants. Docents will focus on the plantings done by Hugh Taylor Birch, and the landscaping created by his son-in-law Frederic Clay Bartlett. You will tour through palm-lined allees, past a stone fountain, a desert garden, and more. When the artists, who worked alone in their respective studios, brought their works together at the site, they were surprised to find “the house absorbed the work in a generous way,” as Bonnet puts it.

Bonnet House’s modern history began when Birch gave the Bonnet House property as a wedding gift to his daughter Helen and her husband, Chicago artist Frederic Clay Bartlett in 1919. The newlyweds began construction of Bonnet House in 1920, eager for a winter retreat where Frederic could pursue his artwork and Helen could compose music and poetry. Frederic’s visits to Bonnet House then became sporadic until 1931 when he married Evelyn Fortune Lilly.

A boisterous example confronts visitors almost upon entry, in the long hallway known as the loggia. So Barnsdall improvised, pushing two Wright-designed tables together to jury-rig a stand for it, asserting herself in the space.
Twelve-year-old McCabe was waiting for a bus to take him to Disneyland in March 1980, when he was snatched, bludgeoned, strangled, and tossed in the trash. The majority of Bonin’s victims had been sexually assaulted and were strangled with their own T-shirts, with the killer using a metal bar to tighten it around their necks. He ran away from home at the age of eight and in his early adolescence, he was sent to a juvenile detention center for stealing license plates. During his time in the detention center, Bonin was allegedly sexually assaulted by older teenage boys. Bonnet and Silverman’s intervention into this hallowed architectural monument posits that creation — even when artists are working alone — is rarely a single, solitary pursuit.
